Lofoten offers two incredible natural experiences depending on when you visit:

  • Northern Lights: From September to March, the night skies come alive with the magical dance of the aurora borealis. Imagine witnessing these unreal green and purple lights dancing over snow-covered mountains.
  • Midnight Sun: During summer months, the sun never fully sets, creating a surreal 24-hour daylight that allows for endless exploration. We absolutely loved exploring and hiking in the midnight sun, with only a fraction of the crowds that were out during the day!

The Lofoten Islands are dotted with picturesque fishing villages that seem frozen in time. Places like Reine, Henningsvær, and Nusfjord offer a glimpse into traditional Norwegian coastal life. Colourful wooden houses, known as "rorbu", line the waterfront, and the local fishing culture is still very much alive.

Visit in winter and you will witness the smell and sight of hundreds of cod drying in the cold sea breeze. Stockfish is traditional produce of Norway, dried without salt on wooden racks outdoors, taking advantage of the cold air and wind.

Getting to the Lofoten Islands from mainland Norway is surprisingly straightforward. The journey offers a couple of convenient options: you can hop on a scenic ferry from Bodø, a trip that typically takes just a few hours and provides stunning coastal views as you approach the archipelago. Alternatively, for those who prefer to drive, an impressive network of bridges and tunnels, known as the Lofotens fastlandsforbindelse (LOFAST), now seamlessly connects Lofoten to the mainland, allowing for a picturesque drive directly onto the islands.
