Starting Your South Wales Road Trip: The Brecon Beacons

Kick off your South Wales road trip in Hay-on-Wye, a charming town on the border with England. Known for its second-hand bookshops and the renowned Hay Festival, it’s a delightful stop, especially for book lovers. Spend some time wandering through independent stores or venture into the surrounding countryside.

Hay-on-Wye is located at the edge of the Brecon Beacons and the Offa’s Dyke National Trail passes through Hay-on-Wye, giving you a chance to explore a section of this iconic trail.

Time to head further into the Brecon Beacons! Pen y Fan, the highest peak in the park is one of the most popular locations, so it can get crowded. Consider exploring some of the quieter spots in the area and if you do choose Pen y Fan, try the Horseshoe Walk, which eases the crowds and offers stunning views.

  • Waterfall Country (including the Four Waterfalls Trail or Elidir Trail
  • Blaen-y-Glyn Waterfalls and Talybont reservoir
  • Waun Fach (the Dragon's ridge)

Optional Detour to Cardiff: A Welsh City Break

No South Wales road trip would be complete without a stop in Cardiff, the vibrant capital. While we’re not big city people, we’ve always enjoyed Cardiff’s chilled out vibes.

Spend some time exploring Cardiff Castle, right in the heart of the city, before strolling down to Cardiff Bay for beautiful views and a laid-back atmosphere. If you’re a fan of TV shows like Gavin & Stacey, don’t forget to visit Barry Island—and maybe even drive past Stacey’s house!

While Cardiff is an optional detour, it offers a nice break before continuing your journey along the Welsh coast.

Exploring the Gower Peninsula: South Wales Coastline

Next, head towards the Gower Peninsula, one of the UK’s first designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This stretch of coastline is famous for its golden sandy beaches, wild cliffs, and unspoiled charm, making it a must-visit stop on your South Wales road trip.

Highlights of the Gower

  • Rhossili Bay: With stunning views, it's perfect for beach lovers and photographers alike.
  • Three Cliffs Bay: Ideal for those who love walking and experiencing nature’s beauty.
  • Oxwich Bay: A large, beautiful beach to explore and relax on.

For a more active experience, consider walking the Gower Coast Path, which offers access to many of these beaches and stunning coastal views.

Pembrokeshire: A Coastal Paradise

As the only National Park in the UK located primarily on the coastline, Pembrokeshire is a true gem. This is one of our favorite regions in Wales, if not the entire UK, and we have too many recommendations to share to fit in one post.

Here are some unmissable spots:

  • St David’s: Visit the smallest city in the UK and explore its stunning cathedral.
  • Barafundle Bay & Broadhaven South Beach: These gorgeous beaches can be reached via the Stackpole Estate's Lily Ponds, perfect for a peaceful day by the sea.
  • Whitesands Bay: A great spot for surfing or simply enjoying the surf and sand.
  • Strumble Head: Hike the coastal path and maybe spot some seals along the way.
  • Tenby: A colorful town with medieval walls, sandy beaches, and vibrant harbor views.
  • Solva: A peaceful village offering lovely views and a tranquil atmosphere.
  • Abereiddy: Visit the iconic Blue Lagoon and take a dip in its crystal-clear waters.

Pembrokeshire is a place where you could easily stay for a long time and not get bored, whether you're kayaking, paddleboarding, or taking a boat trip to Ramsey Island or Skomer Island. There’s something for everyone here, from breathtaking nature to delicious food and drink.
